What is the Pregnancy Discrimination Act?
The Pregnancy Discrimination Act is an amendment to Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 that was passed in 1978. It prohibits sex discrimination on the basis of pregnancy, childbirth and another related condition. This law applies to companies that employ 15 or more people. Under it an employer cannot refuse to hire, fire or treat a pregnant employee differently from other nonpregnant employees.
